Murray River Driving Trips
The perfect driving holiday
Go to the majestic Murray River for the water, wildlife and wonderful scenery. Transform your holiday by taking a scenic drive or heading off-road into one of our national parks.
There are many beautiful scenic drives around the Murray River. If you want to drive without maps, then travel from town to town; it’s a visual delight.
Scenic drives
Nanya's Pad Interpretation Drive is a 100 kilometre circuit, well suited to conventional, two wheel drive vehicles. The Mid-Murraylands Scenic Drive will take you a little longer. This 176 kilometre loop starts in stunning riverside Mannum, heads through Swan Reach, Nildottie, Caurnamont and then across the river at the Purnong ferry.
Off-road driving
Dominated by Mallee eucalypts and sandhills you’ll find tracks perfect for four wheel driving.
The Mount Rescue Loop in Ngarkat Conservation Park is a day trip from Tintinara. For some amazing views across “The Mallee” (agricultural area), take the five kilometre (three miles) walking detour to Tyms Lookout.
The Border Track in the Ngarkat Conservation Park suits experienced four wheel drivers as it skirts the South Australia-Victoria border. This 29 kilometre (18 miles) one-way track cuts through some fragile land and the birdlife is a spectacular reward.
To make the most from your time here, we recommend you follow these guidelines:
Stick the 40 kilometre (25 miles per hour) speed limit and please don’t drive off the existing tracks. We don’t want any new ruts.
Bring plenty of water and fuel and only camp at the marked sites (fees may apply).
When driving on sand, you’ll need to reduce your tyre pressure.
Murray River driving, just go with the flow.
