Fleurieu Peninsula Cellar Doors

Get a real taste

It’s a bit of a surprise to find out just how close McLaren Vale is to Adelaide. It is less than an hours drive from Adelaide to the hills of Old Noarlunga. You will soon see the vineyards raked out in front of you.

It is a wine lover’s paradise. Strong Shiraz, rich Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Chardonnay, fortified and sweet dessert wines, they’re all here (and more).

If you’re staying in the area, your hosts can give you some insider knowledge to set you on your way. The McLaren Vale and Fleurieu Visitor Information Centre is also a great place to start planning your trip around the cellar doors.

Take a tour

Once you’ve finished in “the Vale”, travel up to Willunga and the start of the Southern Fleurieu wine region. This region includes Yankalilla, Mount Jagged, Hindmarsh Valley and Victor Harbor. Up here you’ll find excellent Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and a few other surprises.

Meander towards the Murray River on the winding roads, set just back from the coast and Lake Alexandrina. The climate is a little cooler than in McLaren Vale and Adelaide. You’ll sense it in the earthy red blends and crispy, tangy whites. Sit, taste and dine among thick, old gum trees or watch the boats sail by.

No really, there’s more

Next along is Langhorne Creek, with closely gathered cellar doors and a wide number of boutique producers. Grapes were first planted here more than 160 years ago and the region is known for excellent Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet blends. Don’t overlook the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, fresh Verdelho and dessert wines. They’re attracting a lot of attention from international buyers.

Sea and vines is a way of life on Fleurieu Peninsula. It’s also the name of one of our great events. If you’re here in June, the Sea and Vines festival is a must do experience.
